A few people have asked if I plan to do gear reviews, or make this a gear-oriented site. Though I have written dozens of reviews and comparisons of clothing and outdoor gear, in recent years I've become less interested in gear. The choices you make regarding equipment are important, and it's vital that you know how to use the products you choose. There are a ton of good sites out there that write good gear reviews. Check them out.

When I find a piece of gear that I find compelling or creative, I will certainly write about it.  But probably only in the context of how it helps meet some other objective - safety, ease of travel, media recording, etc.  I don't expect to review gear for the sake of looking at what is new.

Most of the products I use now are 5 or 10 years old.  Some of it is a lot older. I replace a few things each year, and I try new things now and again - usually are a result of hearing about it from a friend. It's simpler that way. I tend to use things that last, and that I've grown to trust. I'm happy to pay more for products that both perform well and stand the test of time.

These cams are 25 to 30 years old and still going strong. They've been used on thousands of climbs. Just replace the cables and webbing once in a while, and they seem to last forever.
